What is Baltic amber?

Baltic Amber is a fossilised tree resin originating from the Baltic Sea Region. When worn against the skin, Baltic amber releases natural oils into the system, aiding in pain relief and reduction of inflammation.
The warm, honey tones of amber have been attracting attention for centuries. Amber is an organic gemstone formed from fossilised tree resin that has been preserved in the earth's crust for millions of years. Not only is amber beautiful, it also gives a glimpse of the past by preserving fossils in its liquid gold. The movie Jurassic Park was based on the idea that dinosaur DNA was preserved in a mosquito trapped in amber, which is not as far-fetched as it seems. Nowadays it is used to produce jewellery. Amber can be found in many different colours such as red, yellow, green, blue, black, milk or extremely rare – transparent. Amber is also known for its inclusions of ancient pieces of animals or plants.

HISTORY and LORE

  • One of the oldest gems from the standpoint of human use. Archeologists have found amber artefacts dating from 5000 BC, and amber was widely traded among early European cultures. Homer’s Odyssey mentions amber as a royal gift.

  • Some of the ancient Greeks believed that amber is crystallised sunshine.

  • Amber is nature’s time capsule. This fossilised tree resin contains remnants of life on earth millions of years ago.

  • The modern name comes from Arabic anbar meaning ambergris, a waxy substance produced by whales and used in perfumes. The only factual connection between amber and ambergris is that both are sometimes found in the sea.
